POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT PUMPS
Positive displacement pumps are typically self-priming. Upon startup, they cause a decrease in pressure upstream, allowing liquid suction.
Positive displacement pumps allow for much higher total head than centrifugal pumps. The discharge pressure is consequently higher.
